What areas of psychiatry does Dr Korevaar specialise in?
Dr Korevaar has a general adult practice, seeing women and men with mood disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety. She also sees patients who may have no specific illness but are having difficulty coping with life. However she specialises in treating women during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
What can I expect in the first appointment?
The first appointment and is generally one hour duration and a comprehensive history of current circumstances and relevant background is taken. Dr Korevaar aims to provide you with an understanding of what she believes are the most significant aspects of your presenting difficulties. A plan of management is then discussed. Part of the initial assessment may be to meet with a family member when this is relevant, and only with your permission - such as the partner of a woman who is presenting with pregnancy related issues.
Do I need a referral?
A GP referral should be brought with you to your first visit, in general it will last for 12 months. If you are referred by another specialist, such as an obstetrician, the referral will last only 3 months.
What approaches does Dr Korevaar use to manage psychological problems?
Dr Korevaar adopts a holistic approach. This means a comprehensive perspective to management is seen as vital. Although medication may be used when needed, most time is usually spent examining psychological approaches, and obtaining a complete understanding the background so that work may focus on relevant aspects of life with the aim of optimising resilience and quality of life. The psychological approaches used most commonly by Dr Korevaar have a mindfulness background to them.
